With its flair and its maritime charms Hamburg counts amongst the most beautiful cities in Germany. To its guests the "Gateway to World" - as the seaport on the Elbe river is also frequently called - offers pure city life with singular shopping, culture but also nature experiences.
The Hamburg culture (13, 500-11, 100 BC) was a Late Upper Paleolithic culture of reindeer hunters in northwestern Europe during the last part of the Weichsel Glaciation and beginning of the Meiendorf Interstadial. Sites are found close to the ice caps of the time.
The Hamburg Culture has been identified at many places, for example, the settlement at Meiendorf and Ahrensburg north of Hamburg, Germany. It is characterized by shouldered points and zinken tools, which were used as chisels when working with horns. In later periods tanged Havelte-type points appear, sometimes described as most of all a northwestern phenomenon. Notwithstanding the spread over a large geographical area in which a homogeneous development is not to be expected, the definition of the Hamburgian as a technological complex of its own has not recently been questioned.
Hamburg (Duits, officieel: Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg, Nedersaksisch: Hamborg ˈhaˑmbɔːχ) is een stad en metropool in Duitsland. Het is de op één na grootste stad van het land en tevens de belangrijkste havenstad. De stad ligt aan de rivier de Elbe. De stad maakt geen deel uit van een deelstaat, maar vormt er zelf een. Binnen de officiële grenzen, die ongeveer 755 km² omsluiten, wonen inwoners. In aangrenzende stedelijke gebieden wonen er nog eens 750. 000. In de agglomeratie als geheel wonen, op 18. 100 km², 4 miljoen mensen.
Hamburg kent diverse vormen van industrie, en heeft een metro en vliegvelden (Hamburg Airport). De Alte Elbtunnel (1911) was de eerste rivierondertunneling op het Europese continent. Er zijn diverse wetenschappelijke instellingen, onder andere een universiteit, twee Max-Planck-Instituten en DESY. De meeste historische gebouwen zijn in de Tweede Wereldoorlog verwoest tijdens het bombardement op Hamburg.
