Ottawa Carleton Trail, 202 at Dwyer Hill Road. Built on the Canada Central Railway bed (CCR). Began in Brockville in 1859, reached Arnprior in 1864, Ottawa in 1870, and Pembroke in 1876. It started out as wide guage and swithced to standard guage in 1880. It abandoned it's Carleton Place to Ottawa run. The Brockville to Smith Falls became a VIA track.
Ottawa Valley Railway (OVR) built in 1881 as part of CPR trans-continental line. Traffic is now routed through Toronto, north to Parry Sound and Sudbury. The rails from Renfrew to Pembroke were removed in 2011, Mattawa to Smith Falls in 2012. The used railway tracks were worth $50 million, more than the railway itself. These tracks built a nation. Looking north.

The object of my interest here is the old Scottish/Irish style stone fence. There are many examples on Amherst Island, just west of Kingston, Lyn On. north of Brockville, 12 km. north of Madoc on # 62, at Franktown and the cemetary in St.Andrews, N of Cornwall. The top layer of vertical rocks makes climbing it difficult, but most are in front of houses and chruches, indicating that they were built for asthetics.
Abandoned Ottawa Valley Railway tracks (OVR) built in 1881 as part of CPR trans-continental line through Smith Falls, Renfrew, Pembroke, Mattawa and to Sudbury. It built our nation from sea to sea. The rails from Renfrew to Pembroke were removed in 2011, and Mattawa to Smith Falls in 2012. It had 483 km. of tracks. Traffic is now routed through Toronto north to Sudbury. The used tracks were worth $50 million, it was worth more dead than alive! Some CEO probably got a big bonus for this.
Canada Central Railway (CCR) once ran here. It is now part of the Trans Canada Hiking Trail. It began in Brockville in 1859 as the Brockville- Ottawa Railway, it reached Arnprior in 1864, Ottawa in 1870 and Pembroke in 1876. Looking west.
The Rectory of Beckwith, an Anglican Church substantially built in 1826, one of the oldest remaining Anglican churches in Ontario, and one of very few with horse stables in the rear still remaining. Check the center of Amherst Island west of Kingston, and 10 km. west of Renfrew on CR #5 for two other examples. The stone fence is unique in this area, it's an ancient Scottish/Irish design, found scattered on Amherst Island, Lyn On., Bridge Street in Carleton Place, 12 km. north of Madoc on # 62.
