Whilst Reid's still maintains a reputation as the place to stay and eat in Madeira, we were sorely disappointed with our bizarre visit.
The hotel itself was reminiscent of a colonialist home for the elderly, ourselves being the only guests below 80! (Myself 23 and my mother 50). The ambiance was lacking and more than a little stuffy.
We were 'invited' to join in the evening drinks in the main bar, which was kind, but also really quite odd and stilted. The maitre d' was very pompous.
We ate in the Italian restaurant, where the food was good but not exceptional, and once again the atmosphere was odd and stilted. Once again, it was clear that the waiters had favourite tables and chose to fawn over some of the elderly guests in a mildly sickening manner.
All in all, the hotel itself is faded, the service was very stilted and felt forced.
I would much rather spend an evening in some of the little restaurants in town, or on the roof terrace of the Vine hotel.
Very definitely past its sell-by date!

Not as nice as i expected. There were no lovely fresh cream cakes and the tea wasnt good.

My friend and I came to Reid's for afternoon tea on 25th September after reading all the good reviews.
What a bitter disappointment . How come you have so many good reviews I don't know. I didn't feel if we were expected no charming atmosphere, which I would have expected from a high class older hotel.
No homemade jams just shop bought in jars or clotted cream. The only things nice was scones and pot tea. I have had better in my local town.
We are staying at the Riu Palace if they served classic afternoon tea I am sure it would be better.

Stunning hotel. Every facility you could wish for. Staff are so polite and helpfull. Would come again. Expensive to eat here. If you are wanting a special treat its the place to be. Only dissapointment for me was a small corner balcony. The gardens are immaculate and beautiful. The cocktail bar is lovely but even with the jazz singer and band who are excellent... we found it lacked atmosphere and because of this ir was empty most nights
