AMI Insurance - Newmarket

I've always paid my premiums annually to make things easy for both myself and the insurance company. Turns out this is a totally bad idea.
Never again will I pay premiums annually.
Had my vehicle damaged in an accident where the other party was at fault, they accepted liability and provided their insurance and contact details. AMI's assessors decided to write off my car and pay me out my agreed value. What I wasn't expecting was for AMI to refuse to part-refund or transfer my premium to a new policy even though my policy is less than 3 weeks old.
After multiple phone calls, I have discovered that had I paid monthly or fortnightly, I would've only lost what I'd already paid but as I paid annually I will lose everything. This leaves me $645 worse off than if I had paid monthly!
I don't see how AMI find it acceptable to leave their customers with a financial loss when they are the innocent party and how it is fair to penalise customers who are willing to pay up front...
What happened to customer service and fairness?

Had issue with my policy. 0800 number didn’t help. Went to AMI Newmarket and they fixed my problem within a few minutes. Outstanding service!
